Ha! It looks like an explosion in my library. At least 12 of these are the exact editions I own. Obviously, some old sf freak like myself has kicked the bucket and his long-suffering widow has finally managed to clear that spare room.

I was only looking for a copy of The Stainless Steel Rat for Number One Daughter. She read the opening chapter and fell about laughing - my battered first edition is far too precious to me to lend her - so I promised her I would get her her own copy.

I also bought her this rather nice Yukata Kimono:

Which slightly more than 50p

I'm really looking forward to 2 a.m. at the Cat's Pajamas - I read Bertino's short story collection, Safe as Houses, last year and loved both her writing and her humour. Wild Child was a bit of a bargain at £1 in Tesco's new competing-with-the-pound-shops aisle.

Ether Day by Julie M. Fenster.

A very entertaining cultural history of chemical anaesthesia, centering around the vivid 19th century personalities who elevated the use of ether, chloroform and nitrous oxide from party drugs to potent surgical pain relievers, and their decades-long struggle to be credited as having largely banished pain from the surgical theater.

The Peter Mendelsund book is fantastic - I've been dipping in and out of it all week. Great insights into his process with lots of rejected cover designs alongside the ones that made it to print. It will sit very happily with my (small but oft-thumbed) collection of books on book jacket design and history, alongside Chip Kidd's Book One, Phil Baines' Penguin by Design, Steven Heller's Jacket's Required, Matthias Hübner's Fully Booked and Peter Curl's Designing a Book Jacket.

And speaking of great cover design, the one for the US edition of We Are Not Ourselves (by Christopher Lin) is a beauty, unlike the UK edition, which really isn't.

He always does a good Biblical-sounding name, doesn't he, John Brenendt? Any good?

I haven't started The City of Falling Angels yet and there's a lot ahead of it in my to-be-read pile. I read Berendt's first book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil a few years ago, and liked it a lot, so when I saw The City of Falling Angels on the shelf for only 50p, I had to buy it.
