I've always had a fondess for "spatula". I also think "melting" is lovely. And "capitulate".

I detest the word "schism" though. Don't know why.

I don't know if I have an actual favourite, but I encountered this recently and I think it's so lovely I would name my daughter it, if I had one, and if the meaning weren't a bit of a problem:

Threnody

...which is, unfortunately, a song or poem of lamentation.

Just merged your thread, aq, with the previous Favourite Words thread...

(hunted out by remembering that one of mine - just for the sound of it out loud - is 'hezbollah')...

I seem to use the word 'illuminates' repeatedly in book reviews, which makes it a kind of favourite.

I like the sound of 'mellow'.

I like the power of the 'c' word (not sure if it is deemed acceptable to post here.)

Authors have fave words too:

Tonight, while reading aloud from H G Wells's War of the Worlds to number one daughter, we counted him using the word 'tumult' six times in one chapter. In a previous chapter he had used it five times. I don't think there is a chapter in the book where he doesn't use it. In 1898 H G Wells really liked the word 'tumult'.

It's starting to get annoying.

We should expect to see "tumult" in the most hated words thread very soon, then.
