Hi Lies, and welcome! Did you have a feeling for what it was that was missing (e.g. emotional connections, a depth of motivation for the characters) or was it something more tenuous?

Hi I'm a new member and have found this thread really interesting. I read VGL recently and loved it. Thought it was perfectly crafted with a unique voice and I enjoyed the whole 'comedy in the presence of death' idea. Very clever.

I think it was 2004 when I started to pay attention to the Booker Prize. I'm not sure I'd have any interest at all if I'd started the year before with Vernon God Little. I'd have to say that Jerkass and m. have both said more to show what I feel about this book than I could. Suffice it to say that throughout I thought it was a failed attempt to show an American lifestyle that doesn't truly exist. I did notice the reference (at least at the end) to who killed his father, but I had given up on the book having any sort of significance by then.
Maybe I'm just not the intended audience. |
