Yes, lyrical is how I see it, and his descriptions are unsurpassed. The eye glides over the pages without pausing to double-check or criticize overuse of similes.

James Lee Burke is one of those authors I seek out when I want to be entertained. Reading a Burke is, for me, easy yet not fluffy. I met James Lee Burke.....it is uncanney how much he resembles his characters.
His daughter also writes mystery novels....I haven't read any of them yet. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=283155

Took a dive into JLB today and bought:
![]() from the Library for 30p. Worth a punt, I thought. What's your opinion on it? Actually, what is the proper reading order?

Strike that, the proper order is:
Neon Rain (1986) Heaven's Prisoners (1988 ) Black Cherry Blues (1989) A Morning for Flamingos (1990) A Stained White Radiance (1992) In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead (1993) Dixie City Jam (1994) Burning Angel (1995) Cadillac Jukebox (1996) Sunset Limited (1998 ) Purple Cane Road (2000) Jolie Blon's Bounce (2002) Last Car to Elysian Fields (2003) Crusader's Cross (2005) I'll take my hat off to the guy, he chucks out a pretty good title. So, thoughts on Dixie...?

I read this one and liked it, I mentioned it (very) shortly here. God how long ago it was... I remember I wasn't maybe enthusiastic, but meant to read more Burke - though somehow he slipped off my radar. Easily can be read outside the sequence, but maybe it's just me, usually reading cycles in that way...
