I was surprised and a little disappointed to see that The Friday Project is to be swallowed up by Murdoch's empire.

I saw that too, though Scott Pack is remaining schtum on his blog, understandably.

Sad to see it being bought out. If it really had to be bought though, why couldn't it have been ANYONE but Murdoch?

Have given this its own thread.

I had read on Scott's blog that there were rumblings afoot at TFP, but had no idea that they were in such difficulties financially. I guess they have to do what they have to do to survive, even if it means as a subsidiary of His Evilness's Empire.

Don't Macmillan do TFP's distribution? They should have bought them!

(Sorry, I'm just being blatantly anti-Murdoch).

Yes Macmillan would (have) be(en) a much friendlier and more simpatico taker-overer. They're very attuned to the whole 'new media' side of things in terms of getting their books out to bloggers and so on, and have an excellent blog themselves. HarperCollins have tried to do that with their www.fifthestate.co.uk site. Both in fact are much more reader-friendly than the Penguin Blog which seems a bit industry-oriented (though not as bad as it used to be). Other biggies like Random House have no real interactivity at all, at least on their UK site.

Agree re the Penguin blog (and I'm not just saying that because I work on the OUP blog). Doesn't get updated terribly regularly either.

The indie publishers are best at blogging, I think. They "get it".

The NY Times online, across the water, seems to have jumped in with both feet, interactivity that is. I wonder if anyone at this site has noticed or has a reaction. It is a big change for them.
If this is off-topic please ignore or delete. I don't want to hijack the thread.

Not quite sure if this is the right thread, and John Self probably knows all this already....

This was on last night as I was baking. It's a tad businesslike but informative nonetheless, and only 13 minutes. Listening again has helped shape a resolution already forming that I'll use more resources to purchase new books and fewer towards purchasing used.
