I know that Wharton wrote ghost stories, but I've never read any of them. I suppose now I'll have to. Thanks for the tip!

I'm going to try and beat you to it when I'm in town today. Placed The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton on hold at the lib. Let's race!

D'oh! If I have "All Souls" in one of my many, many horror anthologies, you're going to wish you'd never thrown down that gauntlet!

Na-na-na-booboo. Hmm, not sure quite what Harold's about here, bill. Read it late last night. Should have tried to find The Willows. The Wharton story would have been spookier without the clumsy exposition at the end. It is beautifully written, but I think you're safe!

See? I told you Harold Bloom was a dumbass! Without having read the story, I know exactly the kind of exposition you're talking about, and that sort of thing has rendered many a good Victorian ghost story merely average. Bugs the hell out of me.

Good thread. Made me look out my unopened copy of the Collected Ghost Stories of MR James (Wordsworth Classics cheapo). And I read O Whistle .... at the end of the night. Started shitting myself when the first distant figure appeared on the road behind him. "I mean that there was an appearance of running about his movements, but that the distance between him and Parkins did not seem materially to lessen." That was the one.

I happen to be spending today at home on my lonesome. And I live in an old Victorian house, which does have a noise-life all of its own. Put it this way, I won't be whistling ....

If I don't check in again, send round the PalimpPolice !
