Re: Filmimplist Conversations

No, I'd wager it wasn't! I actually went to see that in the cinema. Considered asking for a refund, but decided in the end that the many moments of (presumably) unintentional hilarity made the...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

I wonder if maybe I had too high expectations, perhaps expecting another Social Network but with baseball instead of technology.

Things I liked included Brad Pitt (obvs), particularly the...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

I like to think JM was commenting on the impossibility of there even being such a thing as too much love and nudity.

Myself, I certainly find it ironic that a film can seemingly have as much...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

Did you find this a problem, pj? I've read that it's overall extremely kind to the government of the day, which (irrationally, I suppose) puts me off seeing it. Then again, Nixon got a pretty easy...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

Glad to see that Ang also enjoyed The King's Speech, just recently revealed as the movie with the most Academy Award nominations this year.

And gil, it made me smile to see that you rather liked...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

I would go with A Prophet, it being the one I know least about apart from that it's supposed to be very very good. I don't know why, but the more I hear about films the less interested I become in...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

That's exactly it, Bill. I just wish I could bring myself to actually watch the DVDs instead of sitting mindlessly in front of some Tony Scott trash just because it happens to be on one of the...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

Not that I'm not tempted, mind you. Goodness knows I often have Lovefilm DVDs sitting around for weeks before I get around to watching them, and I happily keep on forking out for that.

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

Well, the awards season has done its usual trick and made sure that I'm in a rush to see the following films (in order of release):

Frost/Nixon (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0870111/) and Milk...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

More sad news, though perhaps not as premature. Paul Scofield has died at the age of 86. One of the things that always struck me about him was his wonderful voice.

A Man for All Seasons is one of...

No indeed, he just 'ruminated, cogitated and digested'.

One of my favourite bits of QI consists of Jo Brand asking Stephen Fry if Lloyd Grossman is gay.

Well... it made me giggle,...

Re: Filmimplist Conversations

I like your idea about the flying statue at the beginning vs. the creature from the deep.

I did think La Dolce Vita was an effective portrayal of a man living for ephemeral pleasures at the cost...

Hi Bricklane, this probably doesn't help you right now, but if the BBC 2002 version of Crime and Punishment is made available on DVD, you might like it better than the one in your film list. It stars...

Hmmm, when the published details say 'loosely based' I guess that's a fair indication of liberties taken with the story. Not knowing any DWJ myself, I wouldn't know how that might affect the quality...

Col, I'm guessing you'll be pretty keen on this (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0347149/) as a combination of Hayao Miyazaki and Diana Wynne Jones...

It seems a bit odd that its UK release date is 23...
