Re: Most Hated Words

Mister HG is dead right about contexts [post #345].
I'm less convinced, however, about the equivalence between "pervy" and "sexual"... even if Daveybot prefers it that way... ;-)

I remember...

Re: Most Hated Words

Still OT, because they're not hated words: I'm fascinated by all this thing about the way words sound...

dull... ghastly... lilt... catarrh... chunky... doleful...

When my mother explained the...

Re: Most Hated Words

Maybe part of the problem is that words so easily get turned on their heads [viz. Michael Jackson, I'm bad, I'm bad, I'm really, really bad... when he was still superstar-style brilliant... ]

Re: Most Hated Words

Col, my original point above was that great numbers of people aren't open to what some of us call connotations, derogatory or otherwise. For them, the word *is* the thing or concept it refers to.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Where some people may appreciate the difference between derogatory [queer] and non-derogatory [gay] terms, a...

Re: Most Hated Words

I was in England last week and overheard someone say something like "Oh come on, stop it, that's really gay"...

It was just picked up out of context, but I got the feeling this "gay" was...

Re: Most Hated Words And Phrases

No no... I genuinely didn't recognise the boundrylessness monstrosity - which I'd never seen before, BTW - as being derived from boundary... THEN I thought perhaps it was one of those words where a...

Re: Most Hated Words

Now I remember the first time I encountered LOL in an e-mail and had to ask the sender what it meant.
Although I never use it myself, i.e. not even in e-mails, for some reason I always hear it, in...

Re: Most Hated Words

Listen carefully to Radio 4 and you'll notice that "vibrant communities" often refers disingenuously, euphemistically, condescendingly and hypocritically to urban areas with high immigrant...

Re: Most Hated Words

But isn't it the standard US pronunciation??

There are other fairly obvious stress-pattern differences:

maga-ZINE [UK] vs MA-gazine [US]

ciga-RETTE [UK] vs CI-garette [US]

But I may be...

Re: Most Hated Words
