Re: 2017 Palimplist Discussions

This was my first by her, though I started The Children's Book when it came out and didn't like it.

Re: 2017 Palimplist Discussions

I enjoyed Swing Time, like everything Zadie Smith has written. I don't think it is as cohesive as her others.

Re: A Little Life

It really is an awful book. I fully agree, and think two stars is too generous.

Re: 2017 Palimplist Discussions

I just read through your list, Jerkass, and I didn't gat far enough in Jamrach's Menagerie to notice the similarity to Life of Pi. I don't understand how it got on the Booker shortlist. I did like...

Sorry for the delay in replying, WCarp. I need to get back into checking the forum daily - it's been so long since we've been active.

It's not really a question - can you read the spoiler? Put...

Re: Kate Atkinson: One Good Turn

I see a few of us have read A God in Ruins and all rated it ****0

It may have received the 5-star treatment, hadn't I been a bit annoyed at the twist. It's like a copy of Atonement.

Re: 2016 Palimplist Conversations

Yes, I think so, but it depends how much time you already gave it. I found it engaging from the beginning. I have a soft spot for a protagonist who is a bit nuts but doesn't know it. In this case,...

Re: Harper Lee : To Kill A Mockingbird

Ono will remember Sarah Churchwell arguing against To Kill a Mockingbird at the Cheltenham Booker. She said that it's basically a children's book. Her point was that Atticus was too good. My take...

Re: Ian McEwan

The Children Act - has anyone else read it?

McEwan seems to want to make sure we know he knows a lot of places in London.

I think it's the first McEwan I've only awarded ***00

Re: 2015 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction

Re: 2015 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction

I've gotta say, I'd like to see A Spool of Blue Thread win this thing. I'd forgotten how masterful Anne Tyler is.

Nice to see you back, Megora. Not a lot of activity here anymore but still a...

Re: Folio Prize 2015

I'm very pleased to see Nora Webster on there, and that could be an overlap with the Booker this year.

10:04 may be the only other one also eligible for this year's Booker but I could be wrong...

Re: Folio Prize 2015

I finished Academy Street last night, and although I thought it was good, the telling felt a bit forced in places. For example, the...
