Re: Orange Prize 2012

I wish there wasn't a need for the prize. But, clearly, from statistics issued only in the past few weeks (the VIDA stats, the IFF prize, the translation prize, all showing that a gender bias exists)...

Re: Orange Prize 2012

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this sentence.

Why not have a look at the statistics Polly Parrot? Then you WILL know something about them. They are very illuminating about gender...

Re: Orange Prize 2012

Agreed, Kevin.

Stewart, why does it bother you that the Orange Prize judges are female? It might be interesting if there was a gender mix, I suppose. But perhaps the all-female panel is another...

Re: Orange Prize 2012

Perhaps, Mookse, because of those 25, only two are by women?

The Independent Foreign Fiction Prize long list, also announced today, only includes two women in the list of 15 writers.

This kind...

Re: Merry Christmas Everybody

Genius. That's going straight on the alternative Christmas compilation - thank you.

And MERRY CHRISTMAS to everybody . . . sorry I haven't been around much this year - been kind of busy.

Re: Today, I will be mostly listening to...

I have to confess that I know Elia Rulli but I really do think this new single is very catchy. Available on Itunes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfazcibwdwQ

Re: Recently Abandoned

Kinflicks by Lisa Alther. I LOVED this book when I was a teenager and have always classified it as one of my favourites but recently tried to read it again and found it almost unbearable. What was I...

Re: The Apprentice

Jim: "Susan is a mouse."

Susan: "I do try to voice myself, but..." (rest of sentence is lost in inaudible squeaking.)

Genius - thanks Ono.

Re: The Booze Thread

Isn't Mead one of the only British equivalents? You can buy Mead on Lindisfarne and thereabouts. But not sure 'honey rum' actually exists in the UK . . . though it may do?

Re: The Wire - Spoiler Free

I'd agree that it's a slow burn. It took at least four or five episodes for us to really get hooked.

Re: The Orange Prize 2011

Looks like an interesting list. I have read only one so far - Room. I'm a great fan of Donoghue, but Room didn't grab me. Glad to see her getting a lot of success though.

Re: The Apprentice

THANKS ONO. Excellent as ever.

Surely there must now be You Tube footage of Baggs's expression, which made Strad spouse and I almost lose our dinner? (Goes looking).
