Re: General Election UK 2010

What is it that we are expecting Cameron to do? I've seen their jointly agreed policies and I have to say I am pretty optimistic. I like the proposed increase in CGT, the raising of the tax free...

Re: Ian McEwan

Well that NY Times just about sums up my feelings. An exquisite bore indeed. I can't help feeling that McEwan needs to give a little more thought to the tale rather than the telling of it. I also...

Re: Mad Men

Very good final episode I thought. Really happy to see Joanie back again. I just love how cold Betty is with her children. "Go to your room!" Another year (presumably) to wait though now.

Re: Recently Abandoned

Depressing to see that I have only managed to finish two books this year so far (although I am half way through War and Peace and am pretty confident I will get there). I am absolutely hating...

Re: Mad Men

Well not to me no, but I can see why you say that. Certainly the narrative impetus seems to have dried up. Don's history has been explained and the internal politics of the agency are certainly less...

Crikey. Talk about a difference of opinion. Paul O' Hagan thinks the Green Zone in one of the best war movies ever made!...

Re: Mad Men

I was interested to note last week that Don and Betty live in Bullet Park. I have heard it mentioned that the series owes something to Yates but I think it has more in common with Cheever's world. Is...

Re: Martin Amis

I'm quite enjoying the spat between Anna Ford and Martin Amis which Anna Ford seems to be losing hands down at the moment. Interesting piece...

Re: Cheryl and Ashley

My thoughts exactly. And ST you really don't need to know.

Is it at all surprising though? These are sportsmen with no real education or moral compass who have been showered with money and...

Re: 2010 Palimplist Discussions

Gosh mine too. I didn't know that. This has inspired me to get hold of a copy as I had been meaning to read her anyway.

Re: Travel

Thanks Kevin. Unfortunately we have to go in August with the hordes. This (http://www.weneedavacation.com/Cape/15137.htm) is the place in Barnstable we were thinking of renting. Looking forward to it.

Re: Top Ten book titles

It's Loneliness rather than Solitude and I agree it is a good title. I have been thinking of reading this myself so thanks for the reminder. I hadn't thought about the author's name in that respect...

Re: Travel

Looking for some help.

I am thinking of taking the family to Cape Cod this summer and was wondering if anybody had been there/knows it. I've read a lot about the different towns but it is hard to...

Re: Economic Recession in 2008 and or future?

I'm not particularly optimistic. I'm fortunate enough to still be employed but there have been a lot of redundancies in my profession (the law) and half yearly results amongst commercial law firms in...

Re: Mad Men

What I particularly object to is that it's just not fair on those of us who are too lazy/stupid/technologically incompetent to work out how to do it. Not that I would of course even if I wasn't any...

Re: Mad Men

My word yes JS. I've been looking at the Wire thread and beergood's observations about that series being literary is certainly true of MM. Makes 99.9% of all other telly seem ridiculous.

Re: Mad Men

The third series of Madmen (I know I'm fighting against the tide, but I hate calling them seasons) should be on BBC 4 in February so you have until then to watch it. I can't comment on the relative...

Well I did get round to this and it is probably the best thing that I have ever seen on TV. I am already stressing about the fact that I only have one more episode to watch (of series 2 as I...

Re: Hilary Mantel

Looking at this quote, and I have got beyond this section, the syntax is a little convoluted and I entirely missed the image as a consequence. I also find the present tense slightly difficult in her...

Re: Hilary Mantel

It seems you knew even less than you thought.

Still struggling to get my feet under the table at the 160 page mark. I think I need a dose of the flu myself.
