I love Selby, the Demon is one of the best books i ever read.
The Willow tree is also a great book, not very chearfull, but excellent.
Funny but i know a great many Frenchs who read the demon but...

My brother once stuck his willy in a plastic rifle.
Aimed it at me sort of low, shot, and screamed....he had not pyjama on.

I read both a few monthes back and loved them. As for period pieces, i don't know, they reminded me a lot of Roddy Doyle Paddy Clark or the Snapper.
Of course they could be 80's periode pieces, but...
