Re: Alan Garner: Red Shift

I felt incredibly dim reading Boneland, though I did enjoy it. I was aware I needed probably to re-read the earlier books but I hadn't quite grasped the whole mythos type thing Garner was exploring....

Re: 2017 Palimplist Discussions

I loved both Possession and The Children's Book, but haven't read any other books by her. I would read both again, actually.

Re: Alan Garner: Red Shift

Glad you're enjoying it, lurgee. And after that, you still have "The Moon of Gomrath" in that series. The most recent Garner - "Boneland" - is a finale to the story of Colin and Susan but a book for...

Re: Top Ten: authors whose new book I would rush out to buy in a heartbeat

I have watched the DVD of "Jonathan Strange...." several times - because it is excellent, but also to ready myself for another tome, sooner rather than later.

I think she will follow Childermass...

Re: Captain America: Civil War

I have no background in comic books so anything to do with Marvel and DC is always all new to me, but I generally enjoy the Marvel films - I've watched Captain America: Winter Soldier, Iron Man (1,...

Re: Decent Telly

I like Mark Rylance a lot but I am a little worried that there is a danger that he is a bit samey in his acting. A recent review of Farinelli & the King suggests his quiet brooding face (serious...

Little Women (1949)

I last saw the 1949 Little Women when I was a very "little woman" myself, possibly as junior as six or seven years old, at my own mother's knee. June Allyson, Janet Leigh, Liz Taylor and Margaret...

Re: Ash by Malinda Lo

Oh dear. Admittedly it was several years ago that I read it and the style does seem quite feeble there. I hope other books are more enjoyable and stylistically more impressive.

Re: Recent Purchases 2015

I've been avoiding spending on books recently (waiting for a bunch to come out in paperback still) but a trip to York yesterday brought some treats - books I've not spotted anywhere else plus one...

Re: Decent Telly

I think it is tremendous - the production values are top notch and the acting too. I particularly like Mark Gatiss and Jonathan Pryce (though no more of him now :-( ) and Mark Rylance naturally...

Darren Aronovsky apparently called it the ‘least Biblical film ever made’: it’s a few verses from Genesis slathered in Rabbinic midrash, and expanded sideways and upwards into an apocryphal but...

Allan Massie: The Evening of the World

Was it the mid-Christmas malaise vs. New Year invigoration that made the difference? Or that I...
