Re: Sarah Waters

The Little Stranger is a good, old-fashioned ghost story – its pulp fiction cover proclaims thrills, though the effect has been toned down to suggest something more literary. In the novel Sarah...

10.

Consider voting for the other fine person ("Eric") who posted up a 1-star review as well?

Re: The Cross of St George and the Rise of the BNP

The Today programme mentioned it this morning, and I just googled and found a report here (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1186786/How-BNP-backers-really-foreign-actors-models.html).

Leonard Woolf: The Wise Virgins

First, sorry for having gone months and months without reviewing anything on Palimpsest. Second, I'm sorry that the first review I have posted recently is of a book that doesn't feature on anyone...

Re: Top 10 weepies - films this time

I recently cried whilst reading this thread. I think that caps it all. How embarrassing.

Re: Reif Larsen: The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet

Can you turn an explanation into a footnote to this thread? I read that article years ago, and have disliked Scott Pack ever since, holding him mostly responsible for the decline of Waterstones and...

Re: Happy Birthday to...

Thanks all! I had a bit of a peculiar day, culminating in walking out of a restaurant early for the first time, but it was a good day of being spoiled.

Re: 2009 Palimplist Discussions

Stuff like Shadow of the Wind, Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow, The Name of the Rose etc. tends to have already done well internationally - been translated into umpteen languages - before they are...

Re: Copyrights and wrongs

It's the renting, which implies that money is repeatedly changing hands, that's the problem, presumably - ownership isn't being transferred. Setting up a library without paying lending royalties...

Re: Book 58: BLACK DOGS by Ian McEwan

And it wasn't before the end of February, obviously. I blame Dumas.

Anyway, like Col on her first reading, I found the scene in the darkened bergerie intensely nervewracking. [My copy is a...

Re: Book 58: BLACK DOGS by Ian McEwan

OK, my apologies; I promised to read it and I haven't yet. I'm in the middle of The Count of Monte Cristo, and thought it'd be pretty easy to stick it down for a day or so to read The Black Dogs but...

Re: Booker Prize 2009

Re: Book 58: BLACK DOGS by Ian McEwan

I'm just ordering three McEwan novels from Amazon, Ang. I think I owe Palimpsest some book-chat.

It's nice to know that the familiar McEwan Pivotal Moment TM is present and correct in this novel...

Re: Decent Telly

The Popham restaurant went down well on its opening night, though the customers weren't the usual clientele, but foodies, restauranteurs, and critics. I think that Blumenthal acheived the sort of...

Re: Top Books of 2008

Well, there's no chance that I'll be finishing anything else before the end of the year. Adam Bede lies sadly abandoned by my bed; I rather suspect it could have made the top spot in what has been a...

Re: The Food Thread

Yes, the sun may not be rising till about 10am this time of year (ok, I exaggerate a little), but it's rather lighter than the south of england in summer - nice to see the day start to arrive at 3am.

Re: Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (et al)
