Re: Most Hated Words

Re: Most Hated Words

It seems to me that you are setting the context by the rules of this game into something so specific it cannot be anything but sexual. It started out simply as whether or not fondle could be used in...

Re: Most Hated Words

I like to think of myself as a modern vicar, so when I saw the Nissan television advertisements, I was determined to learn to speak Micra. Unfortunately, words like "spafe" were not very useful in my...

Re: Most Hated Words

That's why they need the guiding hand of an adult. If gay is allowed to mean low quality, then how will gay people feel about using the word to describe themselves? Fine, you will get some militants...

Re: Most Hated Words

I cannot see any other way to view this than homophobic. Either it shows that the speaker thinks that gay (as in homosexual) is a term of abuse or it shows so little understanding of gay sexuality...

Re: Most Hated Words

The IMHOs and TBOs are more a product of the listerner than the speaker, I'm sure. I have participated in internet forums where the failure to couch anything but the most anodyne of comments in such...

Re: Most Hated Words And Phrases

There is a splendid little book called "What's in a Name" which gives the origins of the names of all the tube and DLR stations. It explains that Earl's Court has an apostophe because it is named...

Re: Most Hated Words And Phrases

That's what I meant about my dictionary. It has "boundary" in it but not "boundry". Therefore it is in a state of boundrylessness.

I can usually cope with three letter acronyms but I do get...

Re: Most Hated Words

On a similar theme, I dislike "underway". I have nothing against it when it means a subway or an underpass or some such thing. But when it is used in the context: "the extradition process is now...

Re: Most Hated Words

My favourite use of apostophe's was in the window of a shop in Belfast High Street run by a chap called Mr Pound (by a coincidence, all the product's in his shop cost exactly a pound). The sign...
