Two books under the Christmas tree:

Poor Fellow My Country by Xavier Herbert, which won Australia's Miles Franklin award in 1975 and has been reissued in a lovely 40th anniversary hardback edition. Sounds fabulous, but at 1440 pages of pretty small type it will likely take me weeks to read!

The Concise Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature edited by William Toye. A joy to thumb through, but I've already added dozens of books to my wishlist as a result.

Thanks to Canongate's 60% off sale in mid-December I now have Lists of Note and The Living Mountain to enjoy (Robert Macfarlane was on TV a few weeks ago talking about the latter).
Both books - one large, one tiny - look beautiful and will be proper treats.

A fairly quiet one for books, this year. I've just turned 40 and I think the family was a bit intimidated!

A new laptop! Well, a rebuilt second-hand one. But it's a Sony Vaio, and has a lovely clicky keyboard (look, I'm funny like that, ok?) it's going to make posting on the Palimp a whole lot easier than it has been for the last six months or so. That makes me very happy :-D

I've been avoiding spending on books recently (waiting for a bunch to come out in paperback still) but a trip to York yesterday brought some treats - books I've not spotted anywhere else plus one that's been around a while:

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves - Karen Joy Fowler

YA novels

The Darkest Part of the Forest - Holly Black
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown - Holly Black
Captive - A. J. Grainger
