And only using star ratings from Amazon US...how many lifetimes have you got?

I was curious, so I googled "how many novels" + published. Found, for instance, this article from 2005:

http://mjroseblog.typepad.com/buzz_b...rs_the_28.html
Quote:

According to Books In Print, there were 25,184 books published in the U.S. last year classified as adult fiction. This overall number is still preliminary, and will probably end up being somewhere between 26-27,000 when we stop counting in December of this year.
Since you include "Wizard Of Oz", I'm guessing you're not limiting yourself to "adult fiction", but let's leave that aside. And of course, not every single novel gets published in the US, but just for the sake of argument, let's assume that most average-to-great novels are. Let's also assume that... oh, say, 75% of all novels are utter crap.

That leaves us with about 6000 novels per year that might receive a 3-star rating or higher. Which means that for the 20th century, you've got... let's say about half a million novels. (Excluding "Harry Potter" and the majority of literature written outside US borders). If you manage to read one per week, it'll take you... where's my calculator... 9,615 years and change. Or 126 lifetimes, allowing for an average life span of 76 years (assuming you learn to read in the maternity ward).

Yes, I'm bored.

Re: 20th Century Fiction: A List

Also, using Amazon ratings is surely a little on the pointless side anyway, given that most of them are written by twerps.

Far better to just use the Palimplists, surely?

Re: 20th Century Fiction: A List

....or go to the work of a critic like Harold Bloom who actually believes literature has intrinsic worth and look at what he's included in the modern and contemporary canon.

Re: 20th Century Fiction: A List

I surely did not expect all these kinds of replies. So then this list has no worth?

All I am trying to do is create a simple list with the cream of the fiction crop. I surely do not want to include all of the writings per year- just the worthy ones. As for the ratings...you can disregard it if you wish or rate them yourself. I brought the list here to be modified and corrected: It is undone. Thanks for you input.

Re: 20th Century Fiction: A List

How does one choose the 'cream of the fiction' and 'worthiness'? There's quite a few on the list that a good many Palimpers will never have heard of.

Please help me complete the entire list.
These kinds of lists only have value if the list maker has read the books in question. Otherwise it's pure hearsay. Don't worry about completing the list--an impossible task anyway--instead, start reading the books that interest you (whether on the list or off). This list is heavily loaded with English language books. There are whole worlds of literature that haven't been taken into account here. So drop the list and pick up a good book, aquablue.
