The irony is that the US administration appears to have given the nod and the wink to allow the smuggling of oil to Turkey and therefore colluded just as much as the UN did (http://67.15.90.110/article.pl?sid=04/11/17/1524256), but now the White House is fed up with Annan for not kow-towing to its will, they want to use it as a stick to beat him with.

Sounds about right. Also by attacking the UN, they are also implicitly attacking the Democrats who want stronger relations with the UN and the wider international community, and therefore strengthening their own position.
