I suddenly remembered this morning one of my favorite television advertisements ever. Amner has always enjoyed it, so I thought I'd pass it along.

Even before the time that we had US Senators (I think--can't remember the exact person now) making clever comments such as "Going to war without the French is like going duck hun'in' [ed.: nobody in America goes 'duck hunting'] without your harmonica," we had this excellent advert from Miller High Life, the American "beer":

[Typical American blue-collar man preparing a large sandwich in a dimly lit and rather messy kitchen]

"You know, it's hard to have any respect for the French...had to bail 'em out of two Big Ones in thirty years...[extended pause]...but you really have to hand it to 'em on Mayonnaise."

[man scraping around Mayonnaise jar with knife]

"Nice work, Pierre."

Brilliant!

Nice use of the apostrophes around beer there, mate.

You know, that's all very well and that (and it is a smart ad), but didn't the French help you colonial types out in the War of Independance? Bastards. It could've all been so different.

Vive là difference, I say!

amner (secretly, a bit of a francophile)

No no no, I'm sure you're mistaken.

I'm sure my history classes taught me that the French (and the Germans and the rest of you Old Europe types) were all on the same side as those evil British Red-Coats and were secretly aiding the terrorists all along, in that so-called War of Independence, aka The War of Freedom from European Aggression and Terrorism.

Ah yes, that's right. And you had Mel Gibson on your side too. We sneered a lot and cooked babies. In churches.
