My Top Ten albums, irrespective of genre.
Some of these are a bit obvious, but there's not much i can do about it if I like 'em, is there?
In no particular order:
1. Blue Lines - Massive Attack
2. Whats Going On? - Marvin Gaye
3. Pink Moon - Nick Drake
4. Gold - Ryan Adams
5. Closer - Joy Division
6. Grievous Angel - Gram Parsons
7. The Boatman's Call - Nick Cave
8. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
9. Natural History - I Am Kloot
10. Richard D James - The Aphex Twin
So come on then! Slag me off. I don't care! :D

Who the spangly BeJayzuss are 'I Am Kloot'?
They are a brilliant 3 piece accoustic band. Their songs are a subtle blend of gorgeous, gentle tunes and poisonous lyrics. it's really, really good stuff.

Heard of 'em but never heard 'em. I'll have to have a listen.

I really do heartily recommend them. I think they might have a new single out soon, though no doubt it will be an awful 'euphoric trance anthem' which they release purely to make me look silly.
VERY silly.

I tried to hunt out the album at the weekend but my local (small) HMV doesn't have it racked, so I'll have to wait until my trip to the big city in a couple of weeks. Something to look forward to.

Your heart pumps custard? Isn't that a trifle strange? Heh, Custard, Trifle... geddit?
Anyways, I was going to say that having both Joy Division and Nick Cave in the same list just demands respect from anyone. Some of the music isnt to my taste, but all of the bands are at least respectable.

Interesting (well, kind of interesting...) that you should choose The Boatman's Call from all of Nick Cave's output. I know it garnered a lot of critical acclaim for being mature and brooding and so on, but apart from "Into My Arms" and a couple of the others I can take it or leave it. For lyrical brilliance I'd go for "Song of Joy" from Murder Ballads, or for all-round-genius appeal No More Shall We Part.
Are we agreed that Nocturama is a weak link?
I adored Nocturama when I first got it, but have just realised that I haven't listened to it for ages. I love the idea of 'Babe, I'm on Fire', but after 5 minutes it does start to grate...esp. as there are 10 more to go... Some songs, like 'Rock of Gibralter' are dreadful, thinking about it, and while 'Its a Wonderful Life' is up there with some of his best output, and 'Bring it On' is rather good fun, the whole album is nowhere near the standards that we have come to expect.
I would say in terms of quality that perhaps 'No More...' is better that 'Boatman', certainly 'Love Letter' is a brilliant, brilliant song, but for some unknown reason, if I ever had to chooe between the two, I know I would always go for Boatman. I really don't know why.

Of 'Murder Ballads' I get more affected by The Kindness of Strangers than any other song, and on 'The Boatman's Call' Are You the One... but my favourite album overall would be 'No More Shall We Part' because it's full of stonking songs. Haven't got 'Nocturama' - waiting for my autumn birthday.

9. Natural History - I Am Kloot
Wavid, does this have the brilliant The Great Escape on it? Heard it on Early Doors last night and it shook me to pieces.

Gold? Gold? It's not even Ryan Adams' best album. There are a handful of decent tunes (two of which are on the limited edition second disc) but for the most part I rank it, along with Rock 'n' Roll, as one of his 'love me, I'm a rock star' moments, which are far less interesting than the rest of his work.
As for Nocturama I'll join in the chorus of the let-down. It was the first Cave album to which my overwhelming reaction was 'blah'.

I never said it was his best, Hinton. Just that it's my favourite.
More on Adams here (http://palimpsest.org.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1699), of course.

Oh. I thought I'd consigned Ryan to the trash can of history and now you've brought it all back, Hinton, like the taste of sick. And not even very nice, curry-flavoured sick.

Oh hell, I'm probably just bitter. After picking up his first solo album on a whim Gold was damnably disappointing. Do you have the two disc version, or the regular?

Some of his output isn't half bad. It's admitedly distracting when he seems to be impersonating, rather than inspired by, his influences (Cold Roses is essentially mid-seventies Grateful Dead with a Gram Parsons twist) but he can produce corkers on a good day.

The two disc version of Gold, Hinton. And those 5 songs on the 2nd are among the best on the whole thing!

Hmm. Well, each to their own, I guess, but on the evidence of the CD that Wavid burned for me:
1 Oh My Sweet Carolina
2 To Be Young
3 New York, New York
4 The Bar is a Beautiful Place
5 Nuclear
6 Dear Chicago
7 So Alive
8 Hypnotixed
9 Wonderwall
10 English Girls Approximately
11 Meadowlake Street
12 Let It Ride
13 Hard Way to Fall
14 Always On My Mind
I won't be agreeing with you anytime soon. In fact, I'd be tempted to top and tail Wavid's post The Greatest Genius Who Ever Lived 3: Ryan Adams (http://palimpsest.org.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1699) with Not and (by an alt.country mile). Poor. Very very poor.

My point exactly. The Bar is a Beautiful Place was a personal favourite, though that may have had something to do with a mode of living that had friends checking the local pub before calling at my flat (true story.)

The track listing amner quotes, Hinton, was based on having 2 songs from each album (except 29), in case you were wondering.

Go for it Hinton - you are clearly a sensible person (unlike amner) and so I have fast tracked your ability to post new threads. Why not make it a top ten, listing Interpol as the first and inviting other to complete the list?
Actually, I'll do it myself now by shunting Hinton's post. And Miriam's.
But you can still post new threads elsewhere, Hinton, if you should so choose.

Back to Ryan Adams and slightly off topic, I was at a meeting in the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Monday and caught a bit of him rehearsing for that night's show. I didn't recognise the song but it sounded lovely. Mind you the BH has the best acoustics I've ever heard (and so it should have, sitting as it does on giant springs).

CD was taken away by the Council last week mate, couldn't have it in the house much longer. There are kids here, you know. Impressionable minds. Cultural sponges with no filter. It sort of reminded me of BBMak in a perverse way.

I am utterly besotted by the tracks Avenue of Hope and Great Escape, is all their stuff this good, Wavey? If so, I need to get more. Avenue especially is just astonishing.

I love I am Kloot. Saw them live in Oxford a couple of years ago, brilliant, I'll add my recommendation of them to you amner.
I love My favourite Sky and the opening track Untitled # 1 from their second album 'I am kloot'. buy buy buy
Thanks Digger and Wavid for this...I now have the Kloot back catalogue, and it's fabulous. I'm loving Astray, Over My Shoulder and Great Escape at the moment...
