Here goes - these are not in any order:

1 Catch-22
2 Anna Karenina
3 Anything by Bill Bryson
4 How to be a villain - something my sister sent over from America. I can't remember who wrote it but it is a top read!
5 Wild Swans - hard going, but worth it.
6 Jane Eyre - haven't read it in a long while, but I remember enjoying it.
7 Hamlet - not a book as such I know, but fantastic
8 100 years of Solitude
9 Pedro Paramo
10 The Great Gatsby

An eclectic list (or to use Alexei Sayle's old joke: "I've got very catholic tastes in music. I like anything by the Pope.") - and Pedro Paramo is...?

Pedro Paramo is by Juan Rulfo - in the same (ish) vein as Marquez but much darker with a very hallucinogenic quality. In fact talking about it has made me want to read it again, so I know what I'll be doing tonight! You're more than welcome to borrow it.

Yeah, Pedro Paramo is wild. And very short, so that may appeal to John. I read it years ago and was simply too young to make out it's meaning. I'd like to read it again sometime to see if I've grown to understand it.
